Help others while enjoying a unique trip
Have you ever thought about going on a vacation to help an NGO / Association on the ground? You always think about it, but in the end you end up going on vacation and leave it for another year.
In Gamo Gofa we make it easy for you. How would you like to enjoy your vacation visiting an incredible country in Africa, while doing a unique and rewarding work of solidarity?
How can you help
Gamo Gofa has been organizing summer camps for children and young people for several years in some of the areas where it is present. These camps are carried out thanks to the different volunteers like you, who each year contribute their time and resources to make hundreds of children happier. Without our volunteers on the ground, the children of Lemate and of Dadhim would not have been able to enjoy these activities that they like and enrich each year. Do you find it interesting? So keep reading, because our volunteer project is very different from any you can see.
What does it consist of
First of all, you should know that Gamo Gofa volunteers are responsible for the expenses of their trip and they are the ones who, together with the help of the Association, organize and carry out the camps. This means that you become essential pieces of our social action in the area. The dates of the camps are in July / August, depending on the availability of the majority of the volunteers, since it is in the holiday periods when this work can be done.
Our volunteering in the camps is a very special experience. This implies a great closeness with local people, but do not be scared, since not much knowledge is required (apart from a minimum level of English), but yes, a lot of energy, empathy, desire to live something unique, and above all be useful to a community very different from ours.
Do you come with us?
Ethiopia, a different country.
Coming to Ethiopia you will arrive at a unique place that will change your way of thinking. Its landscapes, its people, its culture make this region a country full of contrasts. Live a unique experience among tribes, natural parks and centenary ruins. And he contemplates his unique sunsets, just as Meryl Streep and Robert Redford would do in Memories of Africa.
The best is usually to fly directly with Ethiopian Airlines to Addis and link to Arba Minch, but this is your choice. Although it will be necessary that you agree more or less between all once we know the people who are going so that we can organize collections, etc. The local flight leaves much cheaper if the international is with Ethiopian, but you can also go from Addis to Arba Minch by car or bus (6-9 hours). To get to Dhadim you have to go first to Arba Minch and then organize a car from there. It’s about 4-5 hours of heat and dust travel with beautiful landscapes 😉
ou will have to vaccinate INSURANCE if you are not already yellow fever and it is normal that they also puncture / order other things such as meningitis, tetanus, diphtheria, cholera, hepatitis, etc. Talk to Carlos III as late as May in order to request an appointment that then collapses.
We will be there to prepare the classes and activities several times before the dates of departure and to coordinate trips and give you more information and preparation about the sites and the people there. However, it is the volunteers themselves who, with support, organize the camp and activities
Material and clothes to wear, etc.:
We will try to take advantage of your trips for, in addition to the material for the activities, that you bring donations of clothes and toys that we can collect among all. We will ask you to please try to take the minimum personal essential to make room (at least one bag per head) to carry material and donations. If you fly with Ethiopian, 2 suitcases of 23 kg each are allowed.
Each volunteer pays for his trip and his stay. To give a reference, flights usually leave for around 600-800 € international and between 700-900 (depending on luck and dates) the international plus the local. & Nbsp; The transport to Dhadim will be borne by the NGO except for special trips that are charged at cost by the Mission and will be around 90 – 120 € per car per trip (to be shared). The stay in the missions usually goes for around 15 euros / day with everything (accommodation and full meal). Come on, that the flight is money, but once there, little is spent. Going out for dinner or a few beers is not expensive. Some more money require safaris, tourist excursions, etc. In general, if you do not do many things like safaris or excursions, 10-14 days leave, with flight, for about 1,200-1350 euros including going out to dinner or having beers someday.
In general, you eat well and varied if you are not very special with that theme (each one is each). In case you are we recommend you take energy bars or things like that just in case. The base of the food there is the injera (a kind of fermented crepe). In missions, there are usually two or three different dishes to choose from or combine (as normal).
We totally recommend that you travel with travel insurance, as well as a first aid kit according to the needs of each one.
